I just don't get the current obsession with protein powders. While I certainly agree with a higher protein intake to help in getting and staying lean, this can easily be achieved with whole foods. Why should processed protein be any better for us than processed anything else?

This smoothie uses the high quality protein of dairy (the extracted whey protein used in most protein powders comes from milk), mixed with antioxidant-rich berries and the probiotic benefits of natural yoghurt. It's the perfect snack to get you over the mid-afternoon energy slump and keep hunger pangs at bay until dinner.

I've used low fat dairy deliberately to keep the kilojoules down and because personally I much prefer the refreshing taste of skim milk. Recent evidence is questioning whether dairy fat is really bad for us, and indeed it does contain fat-soluble nutrients, and some argue that it is more filling and therefore stops you from eating other less nutritious foods. Ultimately it's up to you to choose, but do recognise that this same drink made with full fat dairy milk and yoghurt provides 1050kJ and so do be sure you really do eat less later.

Tip: In summer you can also pour this mix into popsicle moulds and freeze to make fabulous high protein ice lollies!

0.5 cup frozen or fresh mixed berries
100g low fat natural yoghurt
200 ml cold skim milk

Step 1

Put all the ingredients in your Vitamix, or other blender, and blitz for about a minute or until smooth.
